How to Repair a Brick Patio
Step 1: Replace sinking bricks that are not set in mortar.
- Chisel every sinking or loose brick to remove it.
- In order to produce a smooth and level surface for the bricks, fill the space with gravel or sand.
- You may need to tamper and add or remove sand to get the new bricks level with the rest of the patio.
- Reposition the bricks and sand the patio to a thickness of 1/2 inch.
- Complete the brick repairs by brushing sand into the cracks.
Step 2: Replace sinking bricks that are set in mortar.
- The first thing you will do on this step is to remove the problem bricks, and you may use a chisel to do this.
- As you lift the bricks, chip the mortar from the edges and all around the settled bricks.
- Pour one part cement and three parts sand into a wheelbarrow; add water while mixing until the mix resembles a mud.
- You should fill the voids between bricks with about 1/2 inch of mortar. Make sure the mortar is level by using a scrap of wood.
- After the mortar is applied to the brick sides, use a pointing trowel to finish the job. Make sure each layer is about 3/4 inches thick.
- As you pack the bricks into place on the mortar base, make sure they are tightly packed against each other.
- To finish, apply mortar between the tops of the bricks with a pointing trowel, once all the bricks have been replaced. Broom away excess mortar.
Step 3: Replace missing mortar.
- Cleaning the patio will reveal the sort of mortar used, so it would be best to wash the area using a pressure washer.
- After obtaining the correct sand, combine 1 part sand with 1 part cement. Ensure that the new mortar’s sand grain size and color match the old mortar colors and size.
- As you can expect, this ratio produces a stronger mortar than the prior one. Please note that extra strength and effort are necessary for such a job.
- Wet the problem areas and half the grout bag with mortar. Apply enough mortar to overhang neighboring bricks by 1/4 inch.
- Scrape off any extra mortar with a trowel after the mortar has lost its sheen.
- The dampness of the recently placed mortar will help it set correctly. Just allow it to sit for a couple of days.
