Gutters are commonly recommend for just about every home. Whether or not they’re necessary and you should have a Virginia general contractor install them for you depends on the answer to two key questions:
-How much rain will the roof need to handle?
-Where does the water drain?
Without any gutters, a home needs to have a feature that will ensure the runoff of the rain is directed away from the foundation of the home. If there is an overhang on the home that extends far enough out, the water should adequately drain. Unfortunately, this is unusual as the eaves on most homes only stick out around 2’
Why don’t many new homes have gutters?
It depends a bit on the climate. For an arid climate with very little rain, most homes aren’t likely to have gutters readily installed or even required. Generally speaking, most buildings require them. Some builders and Virginia general contractors have been known to leave the gutters off a building because they need to be nailed into the fascia.
Because of this, natural wear and tear develops that can cause the gutters to become loose. A crafty contractor may not want to install it, and instead have another agency install it so that they’re responsible for the warrant work. Especially since this can create warranty work with the eaves and overhands. Skipping the gutter installation can save a somewhat shady contractor money in the long run.
Most homeowners may not even notice that the gutters weren’t installed on a new home because a home can look completely finished even without them. Likewise, if a buyer of a new home asks about the gutters the general contractor may actually recommend that they contact a 3rd party company to tackle that job and get the gutters mounted on the home. Their excuse is commonly along the lines of them not being in the gutter business, or that custom built gutters will function better or look nicer on the home.
Granted, not every Virginia general contractor will act in this manner but like there are skilled and experienced general contractors willing to go the extra mile there are also some who want to do the bare minimum and still collect their check at the end of the day. If you’re planning on purchasing a new home, remember to work out the details with the contractor in advance regarding the gutters on the home.
