One of the best decisions you can make this season is to tackle a little indoor remodeling. The weather may push you inside but that’s no reason to put your design plans on hold. A contractor can help you tackle your Virginia kitchen remodeling plans quickly and easily. The best part is, you don’t have to have the contractor handle every aspect of the job. There are some projects you can take on yourself in order to save a little money. If your kitchen is begging you for a face lift, focus on some key details and let the general contractor handle the big stuff.
The Cabinets
You don’t necessarily have to gut your cabinets and start over from scratch. If your cabinets are all in good shape then you can adjust and improve the look of your kitchen by re-surfacing and/or re-painting your cabinets. Re-facing the cabinets is a little more expensive (it involves replacing the veneers) but it will still save you a lot of money over a complete remodel. Provided your cabinets aren’t laminate or melamine then you can simply repaint them on your own.
The Color Scheme
Your kitchen remodel will likely involve a face lift in terms of color so when you’re rethinking the colors in your kitchen go for a 60-30-10 split color scheme. This means that 60% is a main color, 30% is a complementary color and 10% is an accent color – like a back splash or trim details.
The most comfortable and effective kitchens use colors such as tan, peach yellow and off-whites. Larger items like cabinets should stay a neutral color while you accent the kitchen with easily interchangeable elements like paint on the walls, window treatments and your smaller appliances. When you split the colors in this manner you can save by skipping on the paint company and you’ll be able to easily alter your color choices down the road without a massive investment.
Inexpensive Upgrades in your Virginia Kitchen Remodeling
Hardware is a big deal in the kitchen since it gets used so often. Dispensers, racks, small shelving units, the lighting, the faucet and handles, etc. Every aspect of the hardware in your kitchen can be updated on a small budget to accent the other design ideas in your kitchen. Spending a few hundred on hardware and lighting updates throughout your kitchen is a great way to make a huge improvement on a small budget.
