Getting the Right Virginia Hardwood Floor

There is nothing more beautiful then hardwood flooring.  From the color, the look, and the feel, Virginia hardwood flooring can tie a home together.  While you’ve been interesting in hardwood flooring for years, you haven’t made the jump due to all the negative hype about hardwood flooring.  You’ve seen articles about rotting, warping and other damages a Virginia hardwood floor can suffer from.  While these articles make the damages seem inevitable, don’t fret:  by considering these tips and tricks, you can get hardwood flooring installed in your home that will last for years to come.

One of the first things you have to look at when you decide to purchase hardwood flooring is where you’re going to have this hardwood flooring installed.  Virginia hardwood flooring can be installed in any room of the home, however, a particular type of hardwood flooring must be used in areas that have high moisture content such as basements.  This type of Virginia flooring is called engineered hardwood flooring.  Engineered hardwood flooring is constructed using basic plywood with the top surface being made of hardwood.

Another area to be considered is how many times a Virginia hardwood floor can be refinished.  Throughout your hardwood floor’s lifetime, it will get scratches, dents, and dings, which will take away from the overall beauty of the floor.  Many people are willing to write these dings and dents off as character for their floor, giving them more time in between finishes.  However, if you can’t stand to have these scratches on your floor, you’ll probably need to refinish your Virginia hardwood flooring at least every five years or so.  When a floor is refinished, the dents and scratches are sanded down and the floor is refinished with another protective coat.  Most floors can handle being refinished at least two to three times, however, the thicker your veneer, the more times your floor will be able to handle being refinished.

The last thing you’ll need to consider is what grade of hardwood flooring you’d like to use.  While you may be shopping with a modest budget, cutting back on the grade of hardwood can make a huge difference on how long your Virginia hardwood flooring lasts.  Currently, the best grade available for hardwood flooring is clear grade flooring.  This flooring has the best quality and has simple knots and variation in the coloring, giving it a beautiful and charismatic look.  If you can’t afford clear grade flooring, you can take a step down to common grade flooring.  This type of Virginia flooring tends to have natural variations and imperfections in the wood, making it the type of flooring you’d probably want in non-formal rooms or rooms that get a lot of wear and tear.

Virginia hardwood flooring can be a wise lifelong investment if you take the time to research your decision.  By choosing where you want to put the hardwood flooring, figuring out how often you plan to refinish the floor versus how much it can actually handle, and by picking the proper grade of Virginia hardwood flooring, you can have the hardwood flooring of your dreams.
